Customer Reviews

For the third part of our testing, we wanted to compile customer reviews for all three hooks from various online sites. The websites that we compiled reviews from were Google Shopping, Amazon, Walmart, and Home Depot.

The reviews from Google were:

Small 1.5-lb hooks

When used at the rated weights it looks like it can hold indefinitely.

  • “LR03” - “I put these on my front door for hanging keys. I have had them for several years and never once had a problem. They have never fallen off from the weight of the keys or from repeated use.”
  • “Farmerwife” - “I put a row of these inside a wood cabinet to hold odd keys. I know it says .5 lbs but I'm sure I have + that on a few of them. The cabinet gets opened and closed a lot so the keys swing. I figured I would be replacing them in a few months but they have held tight. I have a sliding rear window on an old farm truck. The closer is broken and I plan oh using 2 of these and some bailing wire to hold the window shut. Definitely 2 thumbs up from this old farm gal.”
  • “MonicaPZ” - “Hung calendar with two "back-up" calendars behind it (in case I lose it or need more space) next to my door so I can check it on the way out. Did not have to enlarge the small calendar hole (why are they so small?) Often (almost always) remove the first calendar to take with me to be able to make appointments on the spot. Also had many things such as notes and business cards, clipped to the calendar. Was sturdy for the entire year I lived there. Actually left it there because I knew the next tenant would find it useful! Looking forward to using your other products!!”
  • “elmc1949” - “. . . Command small wire hooks are much stronger than they appear. They're little power houses. They haven't dropped anything yet. . .”

Reviews were generally very favorable but about 4 out of 60 (6%) reviews reported the hooks falling shortly after application. All reported following the directions.
  • “Doozie” - “The price was fair but two of the three didn't work. I wanted to hang a calendar on my fridge. I cleaned the surface area and waited the hour to actually hang anything on it per the directions and they still fell off within a few hours.
  • “CricketDNA” - “I bought these to hang my oven mitt next to my stove. I read the easy to follow directions and hung my over mitt. The next day both had fallen. So I tried again, this time cleaning the area I was going to stick it to with a little bit of alcohol. Before the end of the day, both had fallen yet again. And oven mitt doesn't weigh very much so I was highly unimpressed.”
  • “Cricket49” - “Used these to wrap mini lights on columns. Came out the next morning to find all lights down. Followed directions but to no avail. Seems they don't stick like they used to.”
  • “joseph” - “My experience has been good for the purpose of convenience, but costly for the tapes. Fifty percent of the time, the hook detaches from the wall or the doors, even if properly attached.”

Medium 3-lb (metal) hooks

These seem to be similar, some people report hanging brooms and mops on them, which probably weigh more than the rated 3 lbs. Others report differences depending on the surface.
  • “Saintemm” - “. . . I needed this kind of hook for hanging brooms, dust mops etc. All the other 3M command hooks were to big/thick to hang these items. I purchased the 3 pound hooks and they worked just great. . .”
  • “Nel32” - “I use these to hang my broom and mop (The bigger ones). I also use the smaller ones to hang a colander and a grater on my wall (saves space!)
They work great! But read the directions cause they do have weight limits. Not all 3M hooks can hold a lot of weight depending on the type of hook it is.
Depends on what kind of wall you are working with also. I live in apartment and some of the walls have cheap paint on them. Even though I throuroughly clean it with rubbing alcohol it still can not be sticky enough and falls off. So some of them work in my apartment and some areas they don't. But they are space savers. And I would recommend if you are using on painted walls to use rubbing alcohol. It helps. I have put some on my furniture too and I don't use the rubbing alcohol then because they stay better for some reason on those.”
  • “springtulip” - “I've had these in my bathroom for 7 years and they have held up very well. They are great for hanging hand towels and using to mind cords for hair dryers, etc.”

A higher percentage (14%) of reviews were unfavorable and reported hooks falling and sometimes damaging the wall.

Medium 3-lb (plastic) hooks

The reviews that I found for the medium plastic hook were for a slightly different product (see the picture here) They are similar to the reviews for the 3-lb metal hooks.
  • “tapster” - “These are used in every room of my house. The kids can use them all by themselves to hang up their personal items in their bedrooms and in the basement to show off their awards. Expecially when they want to rearrange their rooms, it is easy to take down and put up with a new sticky backing any where they want, without bothering me! Great product!”
  • “SheT” - “I have heard of them, seen them on TV and I needed to hang something that was not a picture and used the Command Performance General Hook Pk...OMG, it was so quick & easy and even tho I have since removed them I always, always have them on hand now for any emergency. Believe it or not, I have used them on my windows in my car for shades because I got tired of the round licky ones falling off. These remove easily as from wall and stay put....LUV IT”
Similarly, about 10% of reviewers reported hooks falling or damaging paint, but some low scores were due to putting more weight than it was rated for.
  • “Monika” - “I took the time measuring out space for each bookbag to be able to hang on the wall near the front door and even weighed each bag to be no heavier then 10 pounds . With in a week each one of six hooks failed to last. putting back up time after time. I finally gave up and now the backpacks sit by the front door on the floor. But love the products of command that I will find other uses for them.”
  • “Darl” - “When I went remove hook the pull down piece tore off and I was unable to get off the door. I had to pry it off and of course it took the paint off the door. I am not to happy because I am a renter. I am reluctant to try agin.”

5 star review: Sturdy little things!, June 27, 2014
By Sharyn350z (Neptune)
This review is from: Command Medium Hooks, White, 6-Hook (Tools & Home Improvement)
I'm real happy with the quality of these little hooks. I didn't really think they'd stick to the walls very well and hold up too much, but they really do. Easily removable and idiot-proof installation. Fast shipping and well protected.

4 star review: Must be a really flat surface., November 3, 2013

I like command hooks and use them often. I'm giving these a 4/5 because they wouldn't stick on a slightly textured painted wall.

3 star review: They're a blessing when you move in---but a curse when you move out, May 6, 2014
This review is from: Command Medium Hooks, White, 6-Hook (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was told these were great for dorm rooms, and they are! Until you move out, that is. They are really helpful for hanging small things (key ring, watch) on the wall for convenience as you breeze out the door in the morning.
However, BE WARNED. When removing, even when you remove them the correct way (pull straight down, slowly), the strip tends to snap during the slow downward pull and/or still remove a goodly chunk of the dorm room paint. This, of course, leaves you with a wall with paintless patches, and that's a whole new source of stress when trying to avoid move-out charges. Thanks, 3M. Need to work on that snapping problem.

Other than that, they're fairly good. Again, it's just their unreliable removable that tends to damage cheap dorm room walls.

2 and 1 star reviews mainly dealt with paint and some drywall coming off when trying to remove the strips according to the directions.

5 star review: Great for keys and leashes!, February 17, 2014
By Olivia G. (Atlanta, Ga)
This review is from: Command Medium Wire Hooks, 2-Hook (Tools & Home Improvement)
We use these hooks to hold our keys by the door. They are sturdy and suit our need well. When applying the strips, we cleaned the wall with alcohol and let it dry about 10minutes before applying. We pressed down hard for about 30seconds and then left the hook alone for about an hour to ensure a good seal to the wall. They also come off cleanly when it's time to move, and you can always by strips if you want to relocate the hook. The hook itself is smaller, so you could hold a 1" wide leash on it for a dog, but nothing bigger. I highly recommend these hooks for anyone looking for a smaller hook that can hold about 3lbs!
4 star review: Just what you expect. Good price, good quality., June 26, 2014
This review is from: Command Medium Wire Hooks, 2-Hook (Tools & Home Improvement)
As with any other 3M product, these are awesome. I especially love the wire hooks vs the plastic ones. However, I am not so sure about the strength. I put in a wall pocket and within 20 minutes, one of the hooks fell off. It may have just been user error, but one was holding up steadfast, and I installed them both the same way. The other one was fully able to hold the whole wall pocket by itself, so I am not sure why the first one fell. Maybe make sure you press on them hard for a minute or so to ensure the tape is well in place. Installation and removal are clean and easy, leaves no markings on your wall.

3 star review:Worked great, for about a year, June 30, 2011
By KC (Knoxville,TN)

We bought these to hand a wire basket literature rack on a brand new metal bathroom partition. We place our monthly sales flyer in it, probably 10 copies for about a pound total weight. These seemed to be a perfect solution since it prevented us from having to drill any holes in our new partition (we are very proud of our new building, especially in this economy). They worked great for the first year to 15 months, but then just refused to stick any longer. Maybe the adhesive wears dries out? Anyway, at $5 a pack we can afford to replace them annually, but still, who wants the hassle?

Used to set up hangers for a bunch of keys. Worked great. Easy to use.

Nice price for this item. and they work very well especially on smooth wall, but not good for rough walls.

3 star review: A Little Bulky, June 27, 2013
This review is from: Command Wire Hooks, 9-Hook (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was looking for something that I could use to hang some small shelves on a wall where I can not use nails. The hook on these looked to be less bulky then on other Command products and it was, but still a little bulkier than I would have liked. The biggest problem is that the angle of the hook is much too far out, I would have liked it to be more perpendicular, and that is the biggest problem I have. If you only need hooks for hanging dishcloths or towels, then Command products are great, but the designs don't offer a whole lot of flexibility in use.

Damage free
Been using these hooks for years now. Damage free product on any surface. With living in apartment you are able to hang all command items anywhere need be and remove them any time with no damage to walls. Does not even remove paint, plaster, drywall as long as you follow the instructions that come with package. I hang all my pictures, towels, and various other things with command.

Excellent Product-
I used this item to hang a light weight wind chime on my patio. It has been hanging outside for about 14 months and is secure as ever.
It is attached to the ceiling trim of the covered portion of the patio with the wire hanging down to hold the chime. Works great!!! No damage to the ceiling trim.

Off to College - So Many Uses
My nephew just graduated from high school and will be headed off to college and dorm life. In order to avoid desperate attempts to fill holes with toothpaste at the end of the year, I bought him the small wired hook value pack along with a few other value packs as his graduation present.
As an experienced apartment dweller, I know he will find tons of uses for the different value packs (wire hooks, medium hooks and poster strips). I can't wait to see what he does with them!

Only 1 of 2 Command products I would buy
This product works well and is easy to apply, unlike the Command strips for heavier objects. I've ruined 2 walls with those.

Front Door Wreaths
I have a front door wreath for just about any holiday! One with sparkly hearts, one with Easter eggs, one that is a huge Shamrock, another that is red, white & blue... I have always used an over the door wreath hanger to hang my wreaths. I had to touch up paint the front door after each use. The over the door wreath hanger scraped the front door, at the top, every time. The front door was also difficult to close. I have discovered Command Brand wire hooks and now hang my wreaths with these. I like being able to remove the Command Brand wire hooks when not in use. The Command Brand wire hooks do not leave any marks on my front door that I have to touch up paint when I remove them. I can reuse the same Command Brand wire hooks with only a new piece of adhesive tape. My front door wreaths also look nicer without the front door hanger. I am absolutely pleased with the ease and convenience of Command Brand wire hooks.

Horrible Product
I bought this product last year and it worked just fine. So when I moved I bought the same product for the same purpose. It seems the quality of the product has dropped significantly over the past year. The hooks fail to stick to the wall before I even hang anything from them. I followed the instructions exactly. I even gave the hooks overnight to stick before I intended to use them. However, when I woke up the hooks had fallen off the wall before anything had even been hung from them. I have been through the entire pack of adhesive strips trying to get the hooks to stick. Ultimately I have resorted to taping the hooks to the wall which defeats the purpose of the product. I do not recommend purchasing this product or brand.

The small command hook reviews

At our school this year we got to move into the newly built classrooms. Of course they were freshly painted and the administration wanted to keep it that way. We were told to use only Command products. I bought many packages of value pack hooks, and poster hangers. I had use for many packages of the putty for posters! I now have a wonderfully decorated room that will stay just as lovely today as it was the day the paint dried!

We recently painted several rooms in our home, and I did not want to place holes in the walls. I purchased several different kinds of hooks and other Command products. I now have my pictures back on the wall, and know that if I need to move them, I can do so without having to repair the walls. We used several different Command products for my daughter's dorm room and apartment, and it was amazing how great they can be removed without leaving any evidence.

Damage-Free Hanging Medium Value Pack

5.05 out of 5
For the strongest holds for the majority of hanging items, command damage-free hanging hooks are just "it". I am constantly amazed at what I can jazz up on any wall in my home or office with the varying selections of command hanging products. The best part, no fuss, no mess removing the hooks from the walls. I haven't purchased nails in YEARS to hang anything. The cost value to purchase any pack of command hanging products, in any amount needed fits the budget. When a hanging project is in demand, command it, with damage-free hanging hooks.

I recently purchased two Command Medium hook value packs to use in my closet organization. Long necklaces and wrist-let purses are now easily at hand and easy to grab on the go. The hooks were easy to apply to the wall surface and don't cause any damage. I love this product! I use them for holiday decorating, house organization and in my classroom at school.

Works evey time

5.05 out of 5
Remodeling a older block home in St. Petersburg with painted cinder block walls. With Command products, I can add functional accents, decoration and organization without the labor and trouble of drilling and plugging holes everywhere.
When a new design or whim arises, there is the simple removal and fast, (did I mention fast?), redo with amazing results everytime!
Best thing about Command products here in Florida is that they are available almost everywhere in all colors, designs and types to meet our needs. The dolar value makes great sense too when you consider you never have to clean up, spackle, fill or sand a Command hook or accessory. Ideal for those renters who want that security deposit in full too.
Just what I needed
November 17, 2010
5.0 5 out of 5
I recently moved into a new house with a very oddly shaped master bath. The shower stall is on one end wall, separated from the tub by a door that leads into a walk-in closet. The towel bars are over the tub, so you have to get out of the shower and walk across cold tile floors to get the towel. There is no wall space to put another towel wrack. Putting one of these hooks on the closet door solved my problem. Now I just put the towel on the hook before I get in the shower and just reach out the door for it when it's time to dry off. No more wet tile floors.
Most of all the reviews for the command hooks on homedepot.com were very positive. There were very few low reviews and the ones that were did a poor job of explaining why. That is why I left them out because the positive reviews tell you all you need to know about command hooks.

Hopefully by compiling a bunch of reviews from various websites can provide more insight in a quicker manner for future Command Hook customers.
